North Eastern Regional Institute  Of Management

NERIM, North Eastern Regional Institute of Management is a Post Graduate College established in the year 1992 by NERIM Educational Society. The Department of Technical Education, Government of Assam, initially extended its active support for the establishment of this institute with a view to promoting Management and Computer Education in the North Eastern Region of the Country. The Prime objective of the institute is to design and formulate need-based academic and professional programs independently as well as in collaboration with other leading Management Institute and Universities.

MBA Programme

MBA 2 Year full Time : Development in the international business environment and the consequent impact of the same on India’s domestic market call for an increasing professional approach and flexibility towards managing the Corporate, Govt. and Semi Govt. organizations. The Master of Business Administration (MBA) [2-year full time and 3 year part time] courses have been designed to meet the present and future needs for professional managers. The goal of the course is to create a team of competent managers and entrepreneurs to take care of the expanding business and industrial activities in the competitive environment.

As per the regulation of Dibrugarh University, the MBA program (2 years full-time) with dual specialization consists of four semesters of six months duration each. The first semester shall focus on the foundation course. The second semester shall focus in the functional area. In the third semester, the focus is on teaching the elective subject. A student is required to opt for specializations in any two of the five groups offered in the third and fourth semester by the Dibrugarh University. As per the course curriculum, the student is required to undertake the project work at the end of the third semester during the intervening summer vacation.

MBA 3 Year Part Time: As per the regulation of Dibrugarh University, the MBA (Part-Time) Programme shall be of 3 years duration commencing from July every year and one academic year will complete in next year June. The first two years shall have common courses for all and there shall be two options for specialization only in the third year. Specialization will be offered in Marketing Management and Human Resource Management. As a part of the course curriculum, a student is required to undertake a Project Work at the end of the Second year.

Admission Procedure

Selection of prospective candidates in several MBA Programmes shall be made as per the prescribed rules of Dibrugarh University. There shall be a NERIM Entrance Test (NET) of 250 marks on General Awareness, Reasoning, Numerical Ability, and English Language. Apart from the Written Test, there shall be Group Discussion (GD) for 50 marks & Personal Interview (PI) for 50 marks. Candidates having composite scores of minimum 500 in MAT or 50 percentile in CAT are exempted from NERIM Entrance Test (NET).Selection shall be made strictly on the basis of merit.

The various facilities provided by NERIM to their students is as follows:-

Hostel: NERIM has six separate well-furnished hostels for Boys and Girls with transportation facility to and fro between respective hostels & NERIM campus. Added to it NERIM has developed a well-furnished 300 capacity Girls Hostel within the college campus for homely accommodation.

Girijananda Chowdhury Institute Of Management and Technology (GIMT)

The Institute was established with due approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and necessary permission from the State Government. GIMT is affiliated to the oldest and most reputed University in the State i.e. Gauhati University.

The first session of the Institute commenced on 13th July 2006 with 240 students in four disciplines leading to the Bachelor’s degree in Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (ETE), Applied Electronics and Instrumentation (AEI), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Information Technology (IT). Two more undergraduate courses in Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Electrical Engineering (EE) were added in the years 2007 and 2008 respectively.

The first post-graduate course in Business Administration leading to award of M.B.A degree was introduced in the year 2008. In 2009, the second post-graduate course in Computer Application leading to award of M.C.A degree commenced at the institute.

The Institute also has approval from AICTE to start post-graduate courses in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (ETE), and Instrumentation & Control Engineering (ICE). Classes for M.E. in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) commenced w.e.f. September 2012 and the other two M.E. courses w.e.f. from 2014. Also, the Institute is likely to offer the Ph.D. program in the coming year.

Since August 2013, the institute has also been affiliated to the newly created universities by the Government of Assam named Assam Science & Technology University. All admissions in Engineering, Management and Computer Application since August 2013 have been conducted under Assam Science & Technology University. Students of earlier batches, who took admission under Gauhati University, will continue under the Gauhati University till they complete their academic curriculum.

MBA Programme

The Department of Business Administration started functioning from July, 2008 with a mission to impart quality education in a stimulating and innovative environment where students can be empowered with knowledge and professional skills. At present, the Department offers a full-time two-year Masters in Business Administration (MBA) program under the Gauhati University. The course offers dual specialization in the areas of Financial Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing Management, and Production Management.

Admission Procedure

For admission to the MBA Course, a candidate must have at least a Bachelor’s degree from an Indian/Foreign University (recognized by UGC/AIU) securing not less than 50% in Major or in aggregate of the total marks for General category candidates and not less than 45% in Major or in aggregate of the total marks for SC/ST/OBC/other reserved category candidates.

Candidates, who will be appearing in the degree final examination of 2016 can apply for admission subject to the condition that –

He/she should have passed the 2nd year Degree examination (10+2+3 pattern) held after two years of admission into the degree course, without any backlog and with at least 50% marks in Major or in aggregate. The minimum marks, however, may be relaxed by 5% for candidates falling under the reserved category.Their degree results would be announced by 1st week of November.

Admissions would be based on the performance of students in the Entrance Examination to be conducted by ASTU or in National level tests (CAT/MAT/ATMA/XAT/CMET) followed by GD & PI.

GIMT provides a numerous of facilities to their students :

Central Library: The GIMT Library is on the ground floor of the Academic Building of the Institution and it occupies a total floor area of more than 5000 sq. ft. The GIMT Library is full of different textbooks, reference books, and other reference sources like encyclopedias, dictionaries, novels, biographies, etc.

Computer Centre: The Computing facility of the institute occupies a floor space of more than 300 sq. m. and houses around 600 computers loaded with Windows XP / Vista / 7 & Linux operating systems with an ability to work on different platforms. All the computers are based on the latest Intel(R)/AMD(R) Dual-Core Technology with connected to LAN through a central server. Internet facility with 100 Mbps leased internet connection is available to the computers. Also, 20 numbers of 512 Kbps internet connections are available under the NME-ICT project (a project of MHRD, Govt. of India).

The Department of Business Administration also houses a modern Computer center equipped with sufficient numbers of computers with internet facilities as per the AICTE requirement. This center is meant for use of MBA students exclusively. Similarly, another Computer center, having 90 computers, is in place for MCA students. The students enjoy access to different international and national journals from these centers.

Laboratory: The institute has more than 60 laboratories to cater for all the departments running various engineering courses. All these laboratories are well equipped with the latest equipment to practice students on the latest technology and give the desired experience to them while in the institute. We continue to improve upon these laboratories to keep pace with the latest developments in various fields of engineering.

Assam Don Bosco University

Focussed work on setting up the University began in early 2006. The whole of year 2006 could be viewed as a gestation period during which the focus was on clarifying ideas, preparing concept papers, making presentations before potential stakeholders, and a formal application to the General Council at Rome to obtain the final go-ahead – time well-spent as it resulted in clarifying the vision, the objectives and the approach to the entire project. The Rector Major and the General Council of Don Bosco Society gave the final approval to proceed with the project of establishing the university on 10th January 2007 (Approval No. Prot. 015 dated 10th January 2007). 2007 saw hectic activity to get the project off the ground – endless meetings of ‘ad hoc’ committees, ‘core’ committees, finance and fund-raising committees, drafting committees, short-listing and hiring of consultants, preparation of Detailed Project Reports, search for suitable land, etc. It culminated in a presentation of the project to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Tarun Gogoi, and his cabinet colleagues and top government officials on 23rd October 2007. We were delighted with the enthusiastic welcome that our proposal received on that day.

The proposal of Don Bosco Society, submitted to the Government of Assam on 8th November 2007, to set up a private University was examined by the Expert Committee of the government; and, as recommended by the Committee, the government, on 29th March 2008, issued the Letter of Intent (LOI) to the Salesians of Don Bosco to establish the University at Guwahati in Assam (Letter No. AHE.384/2007/49 dated 29th March 2008).

The Letter of Intent was followed by an Ordinance of the State government on 3rd December 2008 (The Assam Don Bosco University Ordinance, 2008, dated 3rd December 2008), following which the University was formally inaugurated by ShriTarunGogoi, the Chief Minister of Assam, on 6th December 2008. Eventually the Ordinance was replaced by an Act of the State legislature (The Assam Don Bosco University Act, 2009) on 9th January 2009, and published in the official gazette of Assam on 12th February 2009.

Admission Procedure

Admissions to the MBA program at DBIM will be through the following selection process.

A candidate desirous to seek admission for the MBA program at DBIM needs to apply for the written test (DBU-PGET) along with his/her application to the institute. Candidates with valid CMAT/CAT/MAT/XAT/GMAT may be exempted from the written test, on production and successful verification of the test scores by DBIM. Such a candidate would need to apply for admissions to DBIM and become eligible for the latter two stages of the admission process – GD and PI.

Assam Institue Of Management

Established in 1988 by the Government of Assam to promote professional management in North East India, the Institute has been conducting Post Graduate Diploma in Management ( PGDM) Programme since 1994 along with the conduct of the training programs, research projects, and consultancy assignments. At the special request of the then Chief Minister of Assam, late Sri HiteswarSaikia, the AICTE accorded approval to the Programme. Despite having infrastructural deficiencies, the AICTE had been according to approval to the Programme mainly because of the rich academic content and faculty resource. With the shifting of the Institute to its permanent campus in January 2015, the Institute has been able to meet most of the infrastructural requirements.

The PGDM Programme has been structured on a trimester pattern and was reviewed at the national level by CRISIL (a widely reputed international level rating agency). As suggested by the Governing Body of the Institute, the PGDM Programme structure was reviewed by two eminent Professors of IIM Calcutta in 2008. The Programme is regularly reviewed every year in the Academic Council Meetings.

PGDM Programme

The AIM two year Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) program is designed by an Academic Council, formed by the Government of Assam. The program is approved by the All India Council for Technical Educa­tion (AICTE), a Statutory Body of the Government of India for approving such courses. The AIM PGDM program follows the same pattern adopted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).

Each academic year would be divided into three terms, each term is called a trimester. Thus there would be six trimesters in the entire program of two years. Each of the 6 trimesters would be of about 13 weeks. The first-year curriculum would be common to all the students. The second-year would contain core papers and optional papers leading to dual specialization.

Admission Procedure

Assam Institute of Management’s PGDM program is well recognized by its recruiters for the quality of design, contents, and pedagogy. The program has received National A and State A*** grading from CRISIL, the reputed rating organization. The participants for this AICTE approved program are carefully selected through a written test conducted at the national level, followed by GD, written assignment on GD topic, and viva. Admission announcements are made normally in the month of January and the session starts in the month of June every year.

National Institute Of Technology, Silchar

In the late fifties, the Government of India decided to establish Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) under the Quality Technical Education Policy – one each in every major state – with the prime objective of imparting quality technical education throughout the country and to foster national integration. These Regional Engineering Colleges were established as joint ventures of the Government of India and the respective State Governments. Assam is considered as the flag bearer of Northeast India and so in the year 1967, the 15th REC was officially established in Silchar. However, it took almost a decade for REC Silchar to start its academic programs due to various constraints.

The first batch of students was admitted in 1977 in the BE program in 3 branches of engineering namely, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. The total intake in the first batch was 60 students. The inadequate infrastructure facilities consisted of only a part of a hostel, two Assam type buildings (for classes and administration), a workshop building, seven faculty quarters, and a few staff quarters when the College started its academic program in November 1977. Initially, under the guidance of the then Principal Dr. H. R. Chablani, the classes started with only four full-time faculty members. The College started its academic program with affiliation from Gauhati University. The first batch of BE students was awarded degrees in the year 1982-83. Subsequently, two more branches, namely, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering started functioning from the year 1983 and 1987, respectively. The affiliation was later shifted to Assam University in 1994.

On the basis of the report of the High Powered Joint Expert Committee of AICTE and UGC under the chairmanship of Prof. S. K. Joshi, Director General of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Regional Engineering College Silchar has been transformed and upgraded to National Institute of Technology, Silchar with the status of Deemed University on 28th June 2002. The institute has been taken over by the Government of India and subsequently made into a fully funded Central Government Autonomous Institution. This ensures a better financial status for NIT Silchar and will accelerate its growth ensuring that it becomes one of the premier technological institutes of not just the North- East but the entire nation. The institute has remodeled its curriculum and academic activities in line with that of the IITs. With its Deemed University status, the institute started awarding degrees from the year 2002 and the first convocation of the institute was held on 16 February 2004. The Government of India declared the Institute as an Institute of National Importance by enacting the National Institutes of Technology Act 2007.

MBA Programme

The MBA program is designed with a well-balanced theory-practical orientation. The first two semesters are intended to impart foundation knowledge about the various facets of the management field and the subsequent two semesters are to be used for imparting domain-specific knowledge in the area in which one student opts to specialize. The course is blended with various other pedagogical tools like case studies, presentations, group discussions, seminars, live projects, field visits, etc. Additionally, in order to enable the student to acumen the real-life management scenario, the course also requires a student to undertake compulsory industrial training of a minimum of forty-five days in the area in which one specializes like Finance, Marketing, and Human Resource.

Admission Procedure

The admission to the MBA Programme will be based on academic performance, performance in CAT/MAT/CMAT, and performance in GD/ Written Ability Test & PI. The Department will accept the standard test score of (CAT/ MAT /CMAT) taken up during the period of September to February. The selection will be based on scores obtained in CAT/MAT/CMAT and creditable performance in Group Discussion and Personal Interview to be held at the NIT Silchar campus. Self-Contained Residential Campus: The Institute is a residential Institution with adequate hostel facilities for boys and girls. There are 8 Hostel blocks for boys, 2 Hostel blocks for girls and a separate Hostel for the Post Graduate students (boys) with all basic amenities. A good number of faculty quarters provide ample opportunity to draw upon the benefits of corporate life. International standard measurement sports complex: for outdoor games like football, cricket, basketball, lawn tennis, indoor games like table tennis, badminton, separate gymnasium for boys and girls. Computing Facilities and Campus Network: NIT Silchar has a Wi-Fi campus which includes Hostels and faculty quarters. The Institute computing facility is maintained by the Central Computer Centre (CCC) which includes high-end servers and Intel Core-i5 & i7 based personal Computers. Each Department has its own LAN connection. These LANs have an adequate number of computers to cater to the needs of the Department with high-speed Fibre Optic cables (10 Gbps). The Institute has 24 x 7 Internet services. The journals subscribed through INDEST and many other e-source consortiums are available throughout the campus Wi-Fi and LAN. In addition to these NITS is the First Institution to have a C-DAC (Center for Development of Advanced Computing) center in the Northeast region of India.

Library Facilities: The Central Library, which is the heart of the Institute, provides one of the important academic services to the Institute. It provides the right impetus for the intellectual growth of the students, teachers, research scholars, and others around. It has 85,000 collections of documents. The Library holds knowledge resources predominantly related to Science and Technology, Social Science, Management Studies, and other allied subjects. The Library is fully computerized with an integrated system connected to the Campus Network providing e-resource facilities to the institutional community. The entire Library collection including the CD-ROM databases and the online databases are made available through the Institute’s network. OPAC (On-line Public Access Catalogue) facility is available at the Ground Floor of the Library. The Library is holding membership of DELNET, New Delhi for interlibrary loan. NITS Library is an active member of the INDEST Consortium through which online full-text journals can be accessed. The Library is also a member of ACL (American Centre Library) for an interlibrary loan as was resource sharing purpose. In addition to that, the Department of Management Studies has a fully-fledged Library that holds knowledge resources predominantly related to Marketing, Human Resource, Finance, Operations Resource, Information Technology, Economics, and other allied subjects.
